I can't help but AGREE, la! I gerra mention in Luke's intro! I'm the Stan Kelly (NO RELATION) he thanks for writing this song (I did the WERDS, Leon Rossellson wrote the TUNE) It's been recorded often (I sing it on a Folkways LP REVIVAL IN BRITAIN produced by the great Ewan MaColl (also passed away like Luke) BUT must say LUKE's version is DE BEST EVER. RIP mate. And big TA Dubliner85 for wonderful postings.
Stan Kelly born/bred Scouser. Still goin strong at 80,

Was there ever a greater singer than Luke Kelly?....i think not. That voice is so powerful it's almost overwhelming. My absolute hero, and every single song he recorded was faultless.

I LOVE THE BANJO PICKIN LUKE DOES AT THE START OF THE SONG. LUKE KELLY IS THE VOICE OF IRELAND.1940-1984

Yes about the Scouse accent. The best part of this song talks about people from around the World moving to/living in Liverpool. I have lived for +30 years away from Liverpool, but I have always had that ‘a man's a man for all that' attitude’.(Rabbie Burns) Anybody from anywhere will get a friendly chance in Liverpool.. Halleluiah

this is a great song to listen to and to sing. any recommendations of ballads, with similar range of notes (ie, nothing too fancy, with a great story line and not suicidally sad) that are as much fun to learn and sing with friends?

Is right mate. Me great grandfather was from Dublin and came over to Liverpool when he was about 20, This song always makes me think of him.
If I am not mistaken,I believe the Banjo the Luke is talking about was given to him by The Clancy Brothers as a gift.
Great intro for this one.
