Zebra Finch singing its heart out

Closeup on my cellphone, I've tried to minimize shaking but its not perfect. he is trying very hard to impress a female in the same cage.

Otherwise known as Taeniopygia guttata, its the most common petshop finch around here. This ones name is Alex, one of the few surviving ones we've handfed since birth. He was born was polio and was abandoned in our aviary.

@901chloe He is a boy, this is distinguished by the hazel cheeks, the zebra colored breast feathers, and the brown/white streaks on his side. Females have very little decorations of this sort. Alex was born with full plumage resembling that of purebreds, save the white primary feathers and a little Y on his forehead. Cheerio :)

@pulvaris Alex's song was played to him over and over from a recording of zebra finch singing. Being raised in captivity most of the time he pronounced only chirps and babbles. Finding him a girl motivated his desire to improve. Unfortunately the girl went for his dorm buddy [another finch, I'll see if I can record him], a more spotty and feisty fellow. Alex spent a number of his days after trimming his song and decorating his nest. He has thus far won high respects from me in patience alone :)

Sounds like he is not happy but concerned... just read also that the hen died. I think this little guy knew she was on the way out, trying to exhort her to be strong.

my friend, as a piece of advice, try to use a thinner sticks. this will allow your birds to grab the sticks better since their feet are small.
