The stage is set for a musical weekend starting as fans gather at the Kasarani Gymnasium for the MTV Africa Awards. Local artists Nameless, Amani, STL and Wahu are among the top contenders.
The other thing is that most of the Americans in showbiz are paid to sing or perform. Most of these do not have and/or don't need university degrees. But there are people in the background - the producers, the directors are really good at the job. Many are not just in the biz to make a quick buck. Kenyan or African music almost always disappears once the artist is gone. I have for instance been scouring the net for some African music of the 80s but cant find it.!
While the industry is big time here, many entertainers become wrecks - real train wrecks - abusing drugs, going to jail, dying early etc... perhaps because of lack of education? I don't know.
you are totally right but the comparison you made of US and Kenya was not fair. US entertainment industry is the worlds best. Singing/rapping or acting is more about talent than education. I don't know how many US musicians, actors or rappers have degrees but almost all Kenyans listen to and buy American music than Kenyan music. sad but true
I agree with your theme, that the U.S. gives you many chances. But in the same vein, is both a chance for peril as well promise. That is why there are so many who have fallen below the cracks in the U.S. - if you live here you will know what I mean - but if you go to other socialist leaning countries, there is uniformity; longer lifespans; better health care; better education (for all- not just a few); better standard of living (overall); better public transport; few homicides etc...
THE ONLY PROBLEM ---NO ORIGINALITY TOO MUCH TRYING TO APE THE WEST
