A selection of 20th Century headstones lie intact and in pieces at the rear of a main street in a small Irish town. Stones are ornately carved. They stand intact to the right and in a very large rubbled pile to the left. Please do not ask what town this is.

  • Do you know the story behind this scene? What happened at the graveyard which required the removal of its headstones? I'm hoping there's nothing irregular about this situation, but I must say that I find this a very sad sight.

  • @Lugwalker I'm afraid I have very little information about this. This may have been at the rear of a memorial makers premises, but these stones are almost certainly stones removed rather than stones that were never placed. Graveyards are, however, subject to redevelopement in Ireland, and this is not the first time I have come across stones removed from a graveyard.

  • This looks Balbriggan!

  • You do find some interesting things. Strange that such recent headstones would be uprooted like that.
