You replying to say he's a good man was the goal of the whole movie, and you nailed it! It's never stated that he is a good man, you have to draw it from what you learn about his character from his actions in the movie. He is a good man. He loves his family more than anything. The life he has lived makes it next to impossible for him to express it as far as words go, so he proves it by his actions. It is up to the viewer to realize that he gave everything for his son.

I believe that Michael Sullivan Senior was a good man, as the end of the movie provokes thoughts on that idea. He was moral, and from the very beginning he disapproves of killing when it is not necessary. Unlike Connor Rooney, who creates bloodshed that isn't necessary to receive the love from his father that he feels deprived of. Tom Hanks is a brilliant actor but I also thoroughly enjoy Daniel Craig's character. Connor Rooney is a very complex character.
