LIVE NETWORKING EVENT DURING SOCIAL MEDIA WEEK TO DISCUSS VIRTUAL COMMUNITIES AND ACTIVISM
Detroit -- September 2011 -- Three metro Detroit entrepreneurs -- Kiana Doggan German of Style- Detroit.com, Karen Davis of Building Industry Resources, and VaNessa Thompson -- will host a networking event and discussion on "Virtual Communities and Activism," Wednesday, September 21, 2011 at 6:00 pm in the Lafayette Park neighborhood in Detroit. Topics of discussion will include social entrepreneurship, social marketing, social advocacy and social politics. The event takes place during Social Media Week (September 19 through 23).
We've seen the growth of corporate viral videos, watched the Arab Spring protests take place online, and seen the court of public opinion sound louder than the court of law in the Casey Anthony trial in Florida. Whether raising awareness of a particular topic or calling citizens to action, virtual communities on Twitter, Facebook, YouTube and other social Internet sites have played a significant role in connecting people with a common goal. Messaging through e-mail blogs, mobile phones and social media sites is the norm for activists, entrepreneurs, and even large corporations looking to pursue mutual interests, find consumers for a product or service, encourage interaction, or issue a call to action.
The Internet presents an an opportunity to build community, bind fragmented communities, and provide a voice for those who may never have had the opportunity to speak. Virtual communities lower the barrier of entry and participation for individuals and small businesses and can allow all segments of a population to build networks to increase innovation and entrepreneurship.
