Part of a collection of pieces on the subject of time, "Time in M'Ocean" is inspired by the timelessness of the sea. This was one of the showcase performance pieces from the New Jersey Performing Arts Center's 2009 Summer Youth Performance Workshop, a five week program where students studied dance, theater, and singing and performed in a showcase of their given major field. This score was created alongside of the dance during those sessions.

On my score:
Musically, the liquid aspects of the tone of a marimba are magnified by the use of a relentlessly cyclical digital delay. The modal transformation of the "Westminster Quarters" melody (the tune a clock plays when it strikes the hour) is a central theme that occurs throughout.

Choreography by Raegan Bliss Wood, Marcel Coleman, and the dancers.

  • Fantastic music and overall visual performance by the dancers. Most impressive to me is the great live musical performance--hard to believe all that sound coming from one man!
