Hiljaa sa kätesi ojensit,
otit pois sen vieläkin hiljempaa,
ylt'ympäri puut ne helisi
ja kuurassa kimmelsi luminen maa;
ma kuulin askeleet eroovat,
näin varren vienon, mi vieri pois,
ja yksin yössä mä seisoin, - oli
kuin jotakin kaunista kadonnut ois.

Ma seisoin ja mietin ja muistelin:
Mikä olitkaan runo kaunis sa,
jok'äsken soit minun mielessäin
ja jok' olit vallan jo valmiina.
Yhä tuota turhaan ma tuumailen.

It was as if something beautuful had just disappeared.

I stood and I thought and I remembered:
What wert thou, O lovely poem
That just ran through my mind,
All perfect and complete?
I cannot bring it back.
What is gone remains gone.
My mind is so empty
As if something beautiful had just disappeared.
