I think you had more fun making the trap than catching the rat! I had a year-long fight with moles digging up my yard & tried all kinds of traps. Probably wasn't too successful due to not reading the instructions. Finally, I rigged a small set of contacts to close when the mole pushed dirt thereby competing the circuit to set off a model rocket fuse that was stuck in a homemade firecracker. (50 grams of black powder in paper tube). Blew that mole into little bitty pieces! Great satisfaction!
