On Law and Gospel and the Federal Visionists

RedBeetle asked me to watch his video on John Piper and Federal Vision. I decided to use the joint statement these guys formulated, not exhaustively, but just to show why I believe they are not only wrong about Law and Gospel as a hermeneutic for interpreting scripture, but to show how they are intensely mixed up on the distinction between law and gospel as a whole. It's actually worse, I believe, for these guys than it is for evangelicals...

The church is the Body of Christ. How do you partake in the Body? What is your portion in it?

The Cup is a horrific ordeal or even death? Will you take the Cup Jesus took in Gethsemane?

Is the Bread and Cup really crackers and grape juice or wine? Or, is it to partake in the Body of Christ, minister with your gifts (portion) and partake of the gifts of the other members portion and to be willing to lay down your life for the Gospel and each other?

I have a question for you: Does scripture ever refer to the church as the BLOOD of Christ? Lots of people make the argument that St. Paul is saying that communion is about the body of Christ (Church), because he says, "this bread that we break, is it not a participation in the Body"... But he also talks about the cup being a participation in the BLOOD. Is the church ever referred to as "the BLOOD"?

LOL - Matthew, You're assuming RedBeetle is a Calvinist? Naaaawww, you don't say. LOL

Auburn Avenue Federal Vision is so inculcated into the Presbyterian churches now that they cannot even tell truth from error anymore. Today's Calvinists don't know what the Gospel is, never mind what that Law/Gospel distinction is. The tragedy is so monumental that I wonder if it will ever be put right, unless by a miracle of God's mercy.

Few fight for this truth anymore- Thank you for being one of us.

I would love to see a refutation of the Federal Vision that uses absolutely only scripture. I think it would be very hard. Don't pull the Lutheran handbook off the shelf, of the WCF. Both of those are good (especially WCF :) ), and true, but only the gospel should be used to discredit something as "Not the Gospel."

Thanks for pointing out that the Federal Visionists use the language of Paul. ....Maybe it's not such a bad idea. :)

Seriously, I think a lot of confusion comes from the fact that the FV attemps to use the bible language, whereas we hear bible language and say, "well, what it REALLY means is..." Is there danger in that? oh yeah...but the gospel is dangerous.
