Release Date: 26 February 2010
Genre: Documentary
Director: Don Argott
Studio: IFC Films

Plot:
An un-missable look at one of the art world's most fascinating controversies and a celebrated selection of the Toronto, New York and AFI Film Festivals, Don Argott's gripping documentary THE ART OF THE STEAL chronicles the long and dramatic struggle for control of the Barnes Foundation, a private collection of art valued at more than $25 billion.

In 1922, Dr. Albert C. Barnes formed a remarkable educational institution around his priceless collection of art, located just five miles outside of Philadelphia. Now, more than 50
years after Barnes' death, a powerful group of moneyed interests have gone to court for control of the art, and intend to bring it to a new museum in Philadelphia. Standing in their way is a group of Barnes' former students and his will, which contains strict instructions stating the Foundation
should always be an educational institution, and that the paintings may never be removed. Will they succeed, or will a man's will be broken and one of America's greatest cultural monuments be destroyed?

People talk about this being the fault of the Democrats/Liberals, blablabla...

It is a money issue, Barns collected and paid for his collection so it is his propety, to do with as he pleases, he invested HIS money and HIS time....

If his collection was not worth a damn they would have left it alone.

It is about ticket prices, cold hard cash...all politicians (left or right) will say it i for the people....anything any politician or government does is for themselves.

    Wake up...you are being used

Considering it was in the will of the owner that it never be moved or loaned, it wasn't "just moved" it was stolen.

I like how the right wing zealots on this comment page are ignorant to the fact Barnes was a progressive who thumbed his nose at conservative hypocrisy, racism an classism.

This is the crime of the century. The next plea for money from them will get a big laugh from me...in writing. So glad I have never had anything to do with PEW as an artist because I have always had my misgivings and now I feel vindicated that their art programs and contributions are mere acts of CONTROL. Sure they want to bring "creativity to the community" so they have more control. I don't buy it. As long as there are mega millionaires none of us have any rights.

This could have been preserved where it was or left to rot. Either way, this movie shows that money and power rule over your legal rights if there is enough profit to be gained. Don't bother putting anything in your will about something you own if it happens to be worth an enormous amount unless you have kids to defend it.

Art is supposed to reach as many people as possible. "HIS" art? did he paint them?

Jeez people. We just got robbed of hundreds of billions of dollars of our tax money with the financial industry bailout. Yet, the same industry we "helped to keep afloat" rob us daily with hidden and tricky fees. We're still in not only one but two costy wars that benefit not one person here but a few economic sectors

And here you are crying and feeling sorry for "the theft" to a moody billionaire after his dead?
