Mac = PC = Personal Computer

Only HUGE diff between Mac and a so called "PC" is the OS. they are both "PC"s just different OS'

Both use Intel processors, Graphics cards, sound cards, network cards, a motherboard, and a HD.

Of course, a "mac" has this ugly half-eaten symbol on it, but you could put linux and possibly (prob not easily) put win on it

But, how else can we distinguish a "mac" from "everything else"

the ability for a computer to call a landline phone using skype doesn't make your computer a phone, it just makes it kickass. the ability for a phone to access internet doesn't make it a computer, it just makes it awesome. A phone cant do half the stuff a PC can. no massive online player games, no ability to process huge numbers or render photos, edit video or compose music. phones cant network like computers can

I see the monitor, keyboard, mouse and other external devices only as necessary accesories for the average user, one could still fully controll it using TCP/IP.

A optical HDD is still not the only alternative, don't forget the solid state disks, or even PROMs.

you take away the monitor it becomes a server. no longer a PERSONAL COMPUTER. you take away the keyboard and mouse it becomes a PDA. your phone is a phone regardless of its ability to access the world wide web. it doesn't have a optical drive like all personal computers (now a days) have, nor does it contain a decent operating system.

I'd say your iphone is a computer, so what makes something a computer? Is it still a computer when you remove the mouse, yea sure. Monitor, yea it can still be a server. Keyboard, could still boot a server. Heck you could even remove the disc and boot from floppy and I'd still call it a computer.
