Try to learn from Japanese "Syoku Iku" teaching started from 1903. Japanese public school system from Kindergarten and at home teach about foods such as what to eat, how to prepare/use knife&cooking tools and respect people produce foods.
Before graduating primary school, all children know how to cook healthy meals by themselves.
School lunches are also prepared guidance of school nutritionist. Monthly menu, ingredients and calorie tables are sent to parents beginning of the month.

A tomato is a fruit in the biological sense, yes. But the term "vegetable" is a culinary term. It all depends on the chef whether or not a tomato is a fruit or vegetable. However, pizza should NOT be considered a vegetable. That's like saying jelly doughnuts are a fruit.
