US apologizes for Tuskegee-like syphilis experiment in Guatemala

Secretary of State Hillary Clinton acknowledged and apologized today to the people of Guatemala on behalf of the Government of the United States of America for covertly infecting hundreds of its men with syphilis during a two-year period in the 1940's in order to test treating them with penicillin.

The experiment echoes the Tuskegee Experiment which involved about 400 impoverished African-American sharecroppers in Tuskegee, Alabama. This experiment, which lasted for 40 years, involved the observation of men who were already infected with syphilis. However, the scientists never told the men of their condition and didn't treat them with penicillin. Instead, the men appear to simply have been used as test cases to find out what the disease did naturally to an untreated subject.

The Guatemala project was uncovered by Susan Reverby, a professor of women's studies at Wellesley College in Massachusetts. It is doubtful the American government would have come forward with this information had Reverby not discovered its existence.

We are still lab rats not "allowed" treatment and if you go to infectious disease society's claim, law suit the AG of Connecticut won, was cheaper to settle (lie), they are being investigated for not sticking to the settlement. We cant get fair honest research help due to CDC rules passed on the very few places studying the disease. It cripples and kills people yearly and the CDC and states play with the numbers because of funding. Still going on-just not poor black men. We want fair research!

You should check out the controversies on Lyme disease. The only reason it isnt a big deal it doesn't pick on a minority group, but it is happening NOW and there was a rally in DC this May, heard nothing! Look here for Lyme and ilads.org .Not just Government hiding things, but media and insurance also, big money involved. I am not able, to this day, get medical help, was mis-DX for 30 years, went broke and now cant afford help searching for help. Loosing home, lost job/ins/ and my life.
