That happened to our 2004. THe entire HVAC unit shorted, AND the knob was loose.

For anyone that continued having problems after tightening the retainer nut: I had to actually remove the whole panel and get behind the dash. In the video above, you'll see three small dots in the background when he zooms in. Those three dots are solder joints for a 3 wire ribbon cable, connecting to the main board. It's a very weak ribbon cable, so I replaced it with 3 actual wires using a soldering iron. Problem solved. I can't take credit. I did find a blog online that showed the process.

@nanooman I actually worked for the Japanese company that produced the ribbon. It is fragile. Replacing it with wire works well.Thanks for added tip...

Thanks Rick I watched your video ran out to my Highlander took the knob off and that nut was really loose. I tightend it up and seems to work. Thanks for that tip you just saved me alot of money.
