It is the most populous city in Virginia and the 41st largest city in the US.

This area, known as "America's First Region", also includes the independent cities of Chesapeake, Hampton, Newport News, Norfolk, Portsmouth, and Suffolk, as well as other smaller cities, counties and towns of Hampton Roads.

Virginia Beach is best known as a resort, with miles of beaches and hundreds of hotels, motels, and restaurants along its oceanfront.

The world-renowned Mount Trashmore Park, clearly visible from I-264 as you're traveling to the oceanfront. The park is 165 acres.

Near the point where the Chesapeake Bay and the Atlantic Ocean meet, Cape Henry was the site of the first landing of the English colonists bound for Jamestown on April 26, 1607.

It is located at the southern end of the Chesapeake Bay Bridge-Tunnel, the longest bridge-tunnel complex in the world.

Chesapeake Bay Bridge-Tunnel
connects Virginia's Eastern Shore with the Virginia mainland at Virginia Beach near Norfolk - 23 mile long facility, which is about 22 mins from Virginia Beach.

Bridge Tunnel showcases the mighty surge of the Atlantic Ocean, the beauty of the Chesapeake Bay, and the soaring grace of an engineering marvel.

The bridge-tunnel uses a combination of bridges and tunnels over and under two widely separated shipping channels, using 4 artificial islands built in the bay as portals.

Financed by toll revenue bonds, the bridge-tunnel was opened on April 15, 1964.

Man-made islands, each approximately 5.25 acres in size are located at each end of the 2 tunnels.

The bridge-tunnel saves motorists 95 miles and 1 1/2hrs on a trip between Virginia Beach/Norfolk and New York.

American Society of Civil Engineers 1965 award for "Outstanding Engineering Achievement" - Designated "One of 7 Engineering wonders of the modern World" in 1965.

Construction Features : 12 miles of low-level trestle, 2 one-mile-long tunnels, 2 bridges, 2 miles of causeway, 4 manmade islands and 5-1/2 miles of approach roads.

Sea Gull Island - located on the southernmost of the Bridge-Tunnel's four manmade islands, 3-1/2 miles from Virginia Beach.

This island provides the traveling public an opportunity to stop, stretch their legs, grab a bite to eat, cast a line, birdwatch,
or just take in the natural beauty and sounds of the Chesapeake Bay.

Fishing Pier - Cast your line from the free 625-foot fishing pier where bluefish, trout, croaker, flounder, shark, and other species of fish are caught.

Bridge-Tunnel(under the water) Depth of water along Route: 25 to 100 feet.
