Luther was man of his time just like Columbus, Fernado and Isabella, King Henry VIII, John Calvin, et al. Martin Luther was a man who wanted to reform the church not divide it. He was willing to work within the system. The RCC prefered to be more of a multi national corporation rather than a church. If it had listened to Luther maybe Luther would not have gone so far in his theology and could have brought about a more orderly Reformation that was less divisive.

I'll bet there were many Catholic preists in Luther's time period that also wanted Jews killed (not that i condone that kind of thinking in any way). If you look at all of Luther's work you will see that his positive ideologies greatly outweigh the negative. He like all of us was only human and made some mistakes.
