Welcome to itv gold 2's latest "Best of British" presentation. We are happy to play viewer requests on the itv gold channels, if we have the show or film and providing that it links in well with a particular film season. So, we are grateful to olive6405 for not only having fine taste, but also for asking for this gritty British crime thriller from 1961, written by Leigh Vance (who went on to produce the US series, "Hart to Hart") and directed by John Lemont. Carrying the tagline, "A city terrorised by its own evil!" - "It's a film about extortion rackets and gang warfare in the West End of London. It stars Sean Connery, who plays a burglar called Paddy Damion. He is lured into a protection racket by oily mobster Harry Foulcher (Alfred Marks), in order to support his partner in crime (Kenneth Griffith), who is injured in a robbery. However, Damion has his wits about him. Although, Connery's character has a girlfriend in the story, he seduces the beautiful Anya (Yvonne Romain), the mistress of the seedy and sinister crime boss Zhernikov (Herbert Lom). John Gregson plays Detective Inspector Sayers, who is the policeman dedicated to tackling organised crime." The theme music comes from The Shadows.

  • The Theme Music was composed By Norrie Paramor not The Shadows.

The shadows recorded a different version of this Theme.

  • I worked at Reliance Motors in Wakefield and they sold those Standard Vanguards new....

  • Marianne Stone

  • I liked the actress who was in the club bar at the start of the film. The one in the black dress who tended to the beaten up club owner. I remember her in lots of film and TV parts though I don't know her name. I wonder if she's still alive. Excellent film.

  • This is great! They need to show more of this on tv now.

  • Oh, some brilliant gangster names: Tanky Thomas, Salty Brewer, ha ha!

By the way, this is the UK in 1959 and two members of the band have Fender Stratocasters!!!

  • Q: Why don't crooks like smoke detectors?

A: They make it hard to destroy the evidence.

    Nice move at 1:29:19.

    LOL 1:30:28

  • Herbert Lom, what a superb actor he is.

  • Herbert Lom always seems to have a tape recorder secreted in his desk.

  • Very interesting film. And it's almost unknown in the big world. Thanks for the upload!
