The build of Studio East Dining

The Studio East Dining structure was a temporary rooftop pavilion created by the award-winning London architectural studio Carmody Groarke in collaboration with famed East-end eatery Bistrotheque. Carmody Groarke recently won a prestigious D&AD Yellow Pencil in Spatial Design - as part of the 2011 D&AD Professional Awards - for their creative achievement.

The launch of Westfield Stratford City's Studio East initiative took place in the pavilion which was built on top of a 35m high carpark in the live construction site. The pavilion provided spectacular skyline views over key London landmarks, including the neighbouring Olympic Stadium and Zaha Hadid's 2012 Aquatics Centre. Open to the public only from 16 June to 4 July 2010, over 2000 guests visited the structure and enjoyed food and drink 'craned in' daily.

Carmody Groarke worked closely with Bistrotheque in designing the space. The large 120-seat dining room was broken into a cluster of timber rooms lined in scaffolding planks which were proportioned to the scale of each dining table. Similar to a solitaire, the structure itself was viewable from all sides and directions. External balconies provided superior views and the entire semi-translucent pavilion glowed at night.

The 70-ton primary structure was also made using materials borrowed from the existing Westfield Stratford City construction site. All materials were returned to the site afterwards and recycled without any waste.
