These clips of the Lower Swansea Valley in 1963 show rare colour footage of the area during the landmark reclamation project which sought to restore Europe's worst post-industrial derelict landscape.

The Lower Swansea Valley Project started in 1961 and oversaw the transformation of the valley after the heavy industry of the area went into decline after the Second World War.

These clips were made by Franklin Cardy, Geologist for the Lower Swansea Valley Project, and kindly contributed to the ESRC-funded Global and Local Worlds of Welsh Copper Project in 2011 during LSVP's 50th anniversary celebrations.

All these clips are copyright Franklin Cardy 2011.

  • I have clear memories of that time. Travelling as a young child with Mam on the bus journey to Swansea, which snaked it's way through the villages from Ystradgynlais via Ynysmeudw, Clydach, Landore & eventually Swansea. The canal was a favourite, I was sad when they filled it in. The smell of industrial wasteland was something you don't forget.

  • @rhiannegriffiths Thank you for your comment! It is great that the video has provoked your memories of the valley. I just thought it was amazing to see it in colour because all the black and white images make it look more remote and distant than it was.
