Legislator and environmentalist Tien Chiu-chin is also the head of the Cilan Chinese Cypress National Park Development Alliance. The Cilan park they have pushed for was later named Makao Chinese Cypress National Park. Tien says she is seeking endorsement from the public for the park project to protect rare Taiwanese trees. She says the development of eco-tours in the park is also expected to bring benefits to the indigenous residents. In a counter move, Atayal legislator Kao Chin Su-mei is also collecting signatures to support her objection to the establishment of Makao Park. She demands the Construction and Planning Agency to follow Article 21 of the Indigenous Peoples Basic Law to solicit opinions from the indigenous residents before they finalize the project.
