Actually, "Gap" comes from "Windy Gap"--while the fire actually started near Windemere, it was misheard as Windy Gap, an area on the east side of San Marcos Pass.
From the Independent: "Apparently, when the call came in to CHP, the reporting party mentioned that the fire was near a private ranch known as Windemere but this was confused with another location along San Marcos Pass called 'Windy Gap.' "

Thanks. How strange that no one else has clarified this, not the news, no one with the forest service. What do they do--Just kind of grunt unquestioningly when a weird name is thrown at them?

GAP = G.lenn A.nnie + la P.atera Canyon = G.A.P. fire.

333iieee yes its true i was so scared i have so many pets... theyll be hard to take along if we have to evacuate

There are forest service rules about naming fires, and apparently you can only use one word; thus the Painted Cave fire was the "Paint Fire." This fire apparently started in a "gap," a dip in the terrain, but we may never find out which gap it was. Some people say it was Windy Gap, but I have been told that is not correct.

Eep! I have a friend in Goleta! She says the lights are out and she might have to evacuate!

I hope were alright, talks of a windy afternoon...
we got evacuated; it got worse after my husband took this video in our yard. Really scary with crazy flames jumping everywhere. But we are safe, and our pets are safe. Stay safe everyone in Goleta
