PSUbuntu on PS3. Finnish language installed. Using a typical USB keyboard and a mouse. On this video first I switch the default operating system and then I boot Linux, sign in and show some stuff. The newer PS3 Slim edition does not support installing a second operating system.

Update (March 2010): Sony drops Linux support for PS3:
http://www.platformnation.com/2010/03/28/ps3-droppin-linux-support/
http://kotaku.com/5504123/ps3-loses-linux-support

If you have the older PS3 and if the firmware is less than v3.21 (April 2010), then you should still be able to install Linux, but of course playing PS3 games online won't be possible.

My PS3 Installation History page may help: http://sites.google.com/site/maxlimitz/ps3linux
But I recommend using Linux forums where you get help from experts.

  • what do you mean with "but of course playing PS3 games online won't be possible."

if you installed linux you can't play games online no more?

  • @mystylenaruto Linux is no longer supported by PS3, read the video description. That is why if you don't update your PS3 OS then you can't play online, because you need the latest PS3 OS to play online.

  • How much ram do you have? if i bought an older ps3 can i still do this?

  • @Merkalation If you have the older PS3 and if the firmware is less than v3.21, then you should still be able to install Linux, but of course playing PS3 games online won't be possible. RAM is 256 MB.

  • cani install win 7 on ps3

  • @westrsk Second operating system is no longer supported, so installing Windows 7 requires great hacking skills I guess.

  • im new to ps3, why did sony get rid of second operating system? that would been sweet to have your gaming console as a home computer as well.

  • @maxlimitzz ok thx for the reply

  • @policemasta linux is like an operateing system kinda like Vista or OSx or XP or all those popular ones. But linux is whats called an open source operateing system, and that means it is free and people can download it and make there own changes to the system to make it more usefull. It is often used in hacking because of its simplicity and how it dosent use allot of system resources such as RAM. So its just a way for people to get on the internet and stuff like a Windows OS would. But its free.

  • @Drewsky351 dead serious.

  • @policemasta lol are you serious?

  • "No longer supported" by Sony

  • SONY banned the "other O/S" option so you can buy his SDK tool kit for $12,000usd. Hey, it is a big company, si it needs big profits.

There is no point in buying this stupid machine, sure, it has games, but it's no fun when you can't do what they promised at the beggining of the PS3 life, when I got the money to buy one I had to skip that chance, since it no longer suported LINUX.

  • @policemasta go look it up :P
