Joseph Haydn (1732-1809)
Schottische und Walisische Volkslieder
Es weiden meine Schafe H. XXXI a Nr. 153
Text : Hermann Löns

Piano - Heinrich Schmidt
Violine - Walter Weller
Violoncello - Ludwig Beinl

Es weiden meine Schafe
um den Machandelbaum.
Mich hat die Nacht geträumet
ein wunderlicher Traum.
Feinsliebchen kam gegangen
schlohweiss war ihr Gewand
sie winkte mir zu kommen
mit ihrer weissen Hand.

Sie hat zu mir gesprochen
ich sollte bei ihr sein,
wenn alle Leute schlafen
im düstren Kämmerlein.
Was soll der Traum bedeuten,
der Traum halb weiss, halb rot
Feinsliebchen tat mich rufen
und ist doch lange tot.

My sheep are grazing
around the juniper tree.
In the night I dreamt
a strange dream.
My true love came to me
wearing a snow white gown,
she beckoned me to come
with her white hand.

She told me
I should be with her
when all the people are asleep
in the dark little room.
What can the dream mean,
this dream half white, half read,
my darling called me to her
and yet she is long dead.

  • Scottische und Walisische volkslieder are a very treasure of music. Many harmonizations of Haydn and Beethoven are a very masterwork. Do you know Beethoven's "O sweet were the hours"?

    thanks for the beautiful video

  • There seems to be a recording by Fischer-Dieskau I don't have. Maybe someone could post it on youtube?

  • Could anyone kindly upload "Schlaf in deiner engen Kammer" or provide a link.

It is a Scottish popular lullaby arranged by Hadyn. There is a classic recording by Emi with Fischer-Dieskau and de los Angeles. Don't know any other one.

  • Herzbrechend schoen in seiner Einfachkeit!!

  • danke fürs hochladen

  • I like these folksong settings by Haydn & Beethoven. This one is particularly lovely.

  • C'est la première fois que j'ai entendu cette musique. Magnifique!! D'ou vien cette musique? J'aime bien le violoncelle.

  • This is gorgeous!! Beethoven also set some of these folk songs with small instrumental ensemble. But I like this the best of all of them I've heard. Fabulous photo - fabulous Fritz! How could he sing so good[sic]?! Thanks so much))
