This is a very rare Aiwa HS-M2 Stereo Micro Cassette with original Metal Demo Tape and Headphones with Volume Control built into the cable. It was the smallest Stereo Micro Cassette ever made, introduced in 1982 where there was a boom in Stereo Micro Cassette recorders and an attempt to make this a replacement format to the Compact Cassette which unfortunately it never did. It could record on normal and metal formula Micro Cassette's (only available back in the 80's for a short while). It was constructed of aluminum like all good quality Walkmans in that era, Aiwa was also on top of their game then.

  • This I suppose is the best they could do. I think the problem lies in 2 areas, the first being that the tape speed is two thirds of a compact cassette and second that the alignment of the head and tape isn't as precise. Think what Nakamichi did for the compact cassette, there just isn't enough space inside the micro cassette to achieve better results.

  • These things are rare and can go upwards of $600 for a New In Box example like this one.

  • The tape speed is 2/3 of a Compact Cassette so the frequency respond and signal to noise ratio weren't as good. There's also no Dolby Noise reduction to improve the signal to noise ratio. It's still cool that it plays and records in Stereo though.

  • Thanks, this one really took my fancy. Metal Micro Cassette on it's way..........

  • You have got to be kidding me!

  • this one was mine, before i have sell it. But now i get another unit, hope in like same condition.

i have seen one on ebay and made the seller cancel the auction and sell to me to a very very good price. will show vid soon here !!!

  • @Bwindi15

If you have this model PM me, would give you very good money for it, so long it's in good conition, as it going to be displayed, or anyone that has one of these, that they would like to sell.

  • I never understood why microcassettes had to have worse sound quality.

I mean, the magnetic tape has the same width like normal cassettes. So why they could not make the tape speed greater, as to match the tape speed of the normal cassette, and even greater possibly and thus achieving greater sound quality? Was the lack of good stereo heads for the microcassette?

Why one cannot use the electronics of a high quality standart cassette player, with the microcassette mechanical construction?

  • I found one of these in a drawer and couldn't figure out how to open it (yes, I'm a techno-dufus) ... it still works ...! Thanks!

  • Sweet jebus, that thing is pretty. How much did it set you back? And what does it run off of?

  • thanks, gerat
