Una vez generados dos remolinos similares y con velocidad angular opuesta, estos incrementan el tamaño de su radio al ir avanzando. La velocidad con la que se aproximan se vuelve cada vez más pequeña, e incrementan el tamaño de su radio más rápido. El radio seguirá aumentando hasta que se desintegren ambos remolinos. Si ambos remolinos son perfectamente simétricos, la velocidad de los elementos de fluido paralela al eje de simetría en el punto medio entre remolino y remolino es igual a cero. Esta línea generada por todos los puntos donde la velocidad es cero, se convierte en una frontera sólida donde la velocidad a través de la pared es cero.
