In December 1989, an ice storm knocked down WRAL's transmitter, so they turned to the much-smaller WKFT in Fayetteville to get their signal back on over the air. This arrangement lasted for about 10 months.
Remember the morning that the tower came down. My dad and I were watching WCW Wrestling on WKFT when all of a sudden WRAL appeared with a Special Report by Bill Leslie. He informed viewers of the tower collapse and the airing of WRAL's broadcast schedule on WKFT's signal for the near future (it turned out to be all but Sunday Mornings). It was weird seeing the Big 5 on the "small" 40.
@hkfreak They went back when they got a new tower. They were still licensed by the FCC for channel 5.

No, they needed the brand recognition. For the record, on most area cable systems, WRAL is on channel 3. Not sure why.

So...wait...couldn't just switch the branding entirely? Or was cable still doing 5?
