Luca Francesconi's (1956-) "Encore/Da Capo" (1985-86/1995) for small chamber ensemble of nine players (Fl., Cl., Fg., Pf., Perc., A., Vl. ,Vla, Vc.), consisting of the 1985-86 work "Da Capo" and a revision written in 1995, which resulted in the change of title. Performed here by the Ensemble Intercontemporain, directed by Susanna Malkki. The work, while superficially describable as somewhat monochromatic, is, to a fine ear, a fairly gestaltian exploration within what are otherwise fairly tight parameters concerning the dynamics of the work (note durations, tempo, motivic structure, playing techniques etc.) as the musical line of each member of the ensemble slowly expands away from an otherwise very similar ostinato figure, the work having the feeling of often expanding and contracting, each audible "section" exploring minute changes in an otherwise very dense and complex soundscape as unison and formation fractalise into increasingly frenetic figures and disconnected voicing. A highly challenging and rewarding work from one of my absolute favorite composers.
