Fortepiano: Ronald Brautigam

Great performance of the Waldstein sonata by dutch pianist Ronald Brautigam from his ongoing cycle of all Beethoven's solo piano works played on fortepiano. The instrument, made by Paul McNulty in 2007 after a Graf original from ca. 1819 - in combination with Brautigam's perceptive performance - gives the piece a whole new lease of life to modern ears that are used to the Steinway sound.
Each register of the instrument has its own distinctive sound character, which makes for a fascinating new journey into this familiar piece.

Enjoy!

  • Very nice! however try the fortepiano version of melvin tan is even better!, he has been doing

    this for about 20 years now, i thought this fortepiano was a fad, but now see how

    good it is. Now i see that each piano has its own good and bad points, more than a stringed instrument. Also for a regular piano version look for one by

    Carl Haas he played it live before all his radion shows for 15+ years, it will

    grow on you!! many really good versions i also like Geisking, Kempf,

  • @PaulRx4 Thanks for your suggestions. I will certainly keep them in mind!

  • BORDEL !

  • Fantastic!! He played my butt off.

  • :-D

  • Ooh ok, i mistook choppiness for sloppyness, but i don't know what that word means. What does it mean? But i don't feel rushing but excitement but of course music is always subjective but what stands above all is that i think mr. Brautigam is perfectly aware of what he is doing and has well thougt over the choices that he makes

  • I bet ten million dollars that u are not even close to be able to play so brilliant as Mr. Brautigam who is actually the best dutch pianist and highly regarded. His playing is not sloppy but tasteful and artistic and he takes high tempi as Beethoven wanted it to be, nowadays everyone plays too slow. This performance is amazing and nothing less than that.

  • Wonderful, strong and unusual performance of the Waldstein! The pianoforte sounds very good.

  • 7.29 -----> 7.30 nice left hand

  • haha they told me at the conservatory that i played too fast and too loud ; Long life to the wild waldstein !

    5.07 5.08 brilliant left hand ;

    5.15 strond presence of the left hand . never heard it so loud .
