Spectrogram of Ludwig van Beethoven's Piano Sonata No. 8 in C minor, Op. 13 (1st mvt.), commonly known as Sonata Pathétique.

A spectrogram allows you to see precisely which frequencies (on the y axis, displaying up to 4000 Hz) are present in the recoring around any given moment (on the x axis). You can see bright base tones, which correspond to the piano keys, and dimmer overtones transposed above them.

This is a very descriptive way to visualize sound. In fact, it contains enough information to make a (somewhat poor) reconstruction of the sound just from the image.

Made with custom software.
