Most nursing homes, some community loan stores and hospitals use wooden style nursing beds and alternating air mattresses. Some of these will use Squirrel medical mattresses such as the Squirrel Diamond and sometimes the nursing bed (hospital beds) are moved to a different location. We are often asked if we know how to take the hospital bedrails (bed rails or cotsides) off of the nursing bed. Our answer is that you must use the original manufacturers instructions but this short video will hopefully assist in the removal of the safety rails. Occupational therapists, district nurses, nursing homes and hospices should refer to the manufacturer of the bed rail or cot sides and also read the MHRAs documents re: safe use of bed rails as bed rails can both save lives and if used incorrectly cause fatalities. Bed rails otherwise known as cot sides should be used with professional clinical judgement in line with CQCs Care Quality Commissions policy if used in a carehome, nursing home or hospice or if provided by the community equipment stores or social services for independent living of home care. Alternating air mattresses and nursing beds can help enable persons living with conditions such as cerebral palsy, head injuries, T7 & 8 paraplegics. These devices are often available to view at disabled living centres.
