http://LivinLaVidaLowCarb.com/blog blogger Jimmy Moore and his wife Christine have heard from so many people who are upset that their thin friends are able to eat whatever carbohydrates they want and stay skinny while they are forced to eat low-carb and struggled to keep their weight in check. But what the scale says doesn't necessarily correlate to the health of those individuals as your favorite low-carb couple share in the latest installment of their popular "Livin' La Vida Low-Carb on YouTube" series.
In Episode 70, Jimmy and Christine discuss a concept put forth by low-carb physician Dr. Mary C. Vernon at the recent ASBP/Nutrition & Metabolism meeting in Charleston, SC that there are a bunch of thin people walking around who are, in essence, "metabolically obese." What this means is that despite the fact these people look like they are healthy on the outside, some very specific health markers say otherwise--including low HDL cholesterol, high triglycerides, and elevated levels of the small, dense LDL particles that are the main culprit in heart disease.
Not surprisingly, a low-carb diet has been shown in numerous research studies to raise HDL "good" cholesterol to over 50, lower triglycerides to below 100, and change the quality of your LDL particles to the large, fluffy, protective kind while virtually eliminating the small, dense, and dangerous kind. So even when the scale isn't cooperating and the weight loss on your low-carb lifestyle may not be where you'd like it to be, take solace in the fact that you are working your way towards the most incredible health you've ever experienced in your entire life by livin' la vida low-carb no matter what your size.

hey jim,
iv been on the diet for about 5 months, 2 months ago i got a blood test and my HDl went down from 70 to about 51 and my LDL went up to 161. My Triglycerides went down to 79 however. I dont know what its about but im sticking with it, incorporating more veggies. Anything that i could have done wrong? or caused that?

@rsbutz1 You didn't say how much weight you've lost, but I'm assuming more than 20 pounds. If so, then this is a normal reaction and will stabilize once your weight stabilizes. Make sure you are eating plenty of fat, adequate amounts of protein, and low-carb. Higher fat will raise your HDL cholesterol above 50 and stay there and lower carbs will make sure your triglycerides are below 100. You've not done anything wrong and it sounds like you're numbers are great! LDL is irrelevant.
