i think he's just being ironic. he got somewhere in the business because he's so bloody talented. excellent song writer. i'm sure that other professionals have a book of some sort to help them though their work...as a trainee doctor we are always told to check the BNF when prescrbing drugs, and forever after qualification. ymy GP always checks up his med's before prescribing - however, raz, if u like i'm sure i could prescribe u sum pretty intersting med's w/o using a book, it'd be a pleasure to

Having heard it from the horses mouth, it is purely being superstitious. paul feels more comfortable with the lyrics on stage, he never really looks at them. How he has made it in the business is pretty self explanatory. Great mind, brilliant talent and at least some courage, other than you, you useless twat having to hide behind a stupid nick.

This talented musician doesnt need to read his lyrics, its just something he's done since the days of the Housemartins (his first band). He has made it in the "business" because his lyrics are meaningful and not like the typical shite that most singers or bands put out these days. He can also sing live, something quite rare amongst artists nowadays. And just for your information he and his former bands have been great successes in the UK music industry and he has a very large fan base.
