To be fair, if they had signal, the movie would end after 2 minutes... But it still bothers me no one has yet found a way around that cliché in horror movies.

Emergency workers don't show up immediately after you make a phone call. In the time it takes them to come, the heroes can be killed. Or the cliche can be avoided by having the cops get killed by the monster, like what The Shining, Saw, and some other horror movies have done.

Yeah, that's lazy-as-hell writing. I figure, if they're trying to contact the police, it could take the cops at least 30-40 minutes to get there, and even then perhaps they could write in some stuff to hold the cops up.

Alt, the phones could fall in water, fall off from a high place, get run over, etc.
