The boot lid number plate was hinged just for this. No car "ever" has given over more of its volume for luggage and people.
The engine was standard off-the shelf job and overpowered having to be detuned. It would have been better if a new alum' engine was specifically made for it - as Issigonis wanted.

They were very much designed for space.. No other car so small externally has more space inside! The open boot loaded with luggage is part of the design (same as FX4 taxi) so isn't at all dangerous.
I'm not an owner by the way, just defending Alec issigonis's genius design!
