This news report is hiding an important part of the 'Africatown' story there. In 1860, that last shipload of Africans were smuggled into that Alabama port ILLEGALLY. Federal Gov had already outlawed the 'international' Slave trade. But Timothy Meaher, a wealthy Alabama planter, boasted that he could bring “a shipful of niggers right into Mobile Bay under the officers’ noses,” defying the federal ban on international slave trading. He did, and burned his ship on arrival to dodge the Feds.
It would be so awesome if those people in all the unmarked slave graves across America could be identified so every African American today can trace their family lines way back to each individual slave ancestor . It would be cool if I knew who my great great great grand parents were, i would love to go to my ancestors graves and pay them homage .
