This is our story of adopting an older child from China. It talks about our travel to China, Gotcha Day, the adjustments in the USA, the difficulties and challenges, and giving this child a new life.

Thank you! That is encouraging to hear! We've come a LONG way (it's been 3 yrs now). She still has many issues at home that we're continuing to work through. In public she's great and people always comment on how sweet/polite she is. Others that walked beside us during the first two years know what we went through. Through LOTS of prayer she is finally managable, has accepted our bio-kids & that I can love more than one child, is polite & appreciates us more.

Thank you. Adoption isn't always a bed-of-roses... it can be down right difficult. I wanted to gently communicate that, because we were not prepared for the challenges. For us, it has been one of the most difficult things our family has been through. However, God is blessing Kaitlyn and our family through our perseverance. She is getting better all the time and has DRASTICALLY changed for the better! Most can't picture her being anything other than sweet now.

We traveled with a group of other American families also adopting. We had Bilingual guides with us in each of the three provinces we travel to. We were well taken care of and didn't have much difficulty with the language. Oh, we also purchased an electronic translator which was very helpful with short phrases.

Yes, we believe so based on some of the information she has told us. She was also abused by a foster mother she had for two years. Very sad, but God is healing her emotional wounds.

She didn't blink an eye with the name change. We kept part of her Chinese name as her middle name. We called her her Chinese name and added Kaitlyn to the end of it for the first couple months then slowly dropped the full Chinese name.

  • Thank you everyone! It has been a long, hard road. I was very cautious with my word choice and the information I shared & will continue to do so. However, I have to say the first 2 years where extremely difficult & there were times I second guessed things. She's no longer out-of-control, consumed with jealousy of our bio daughter or physically aggressive toward her. She has much to learn but has become well behaved, polite, helpful and is adapting well-only through the grace of God & prayer!

  • I can TOTALLY understand everything you described in your video. We adopted our teenage daughter as a thirteen-year-old from Thailand. VERY similar story to Kaitlyn's! But, we didn't have other children for to be jealous of. I was amazed that although it was her idea to get a pet after we came home, she sometimes was jealous if we paid any attention to the cat. We've come a long ways! But, starting next semester we're going to try homeschooling. I think it will be a better fit for her.

  • How did she adapt to the name change? I'm about to begin the process myself, my family think I should change the child's name, but I need to be sure..

How did you tell her she was getting a new name, and how did she respond?

  • that is just amazing! you gave kaitlen a wonderful non abusive live. she will never be phisically hurt anymore!
