i am just getting into NFL over here in the UK, such a good game and its starting to take off, but one thing i always wanted to know why is it actually called football? because it hardly involves the feet and the ball touching where as in our football (soccer) its pretty obvious why we call it football, i just wondered if anyone knows how it started being called football?
Im pretty sure its because the American colonists rejected European football and created their own game inspired by rugby. They called it football simply because it is American Football. I guess.. Haha
The history of American football can be traced to early versions of rugby football and association football (called soccer in the United States). Both games have their origins in varieties of football played in the United Kingdom in the mid-19th century, in which a ball is kicked at a goal and/or run over a line.
