Equipped with a radioisotope thermoelectric generator, Voyager 2 was launched from Launch Complex 41 at Cape Canaveral on August 20, 1977. The spacecraft was lifted above the atmosphere by a Titan IIIE rocket and Centaur upper stage booster where it extended its instruments and prepared for the boost to escape Earth's gravity. Voyager 2 also carries a Golden Record, which contains various sounds of Earth ranging from music to nature and a greeting if any extraterrestrials were to discover the spacecraft which was contributed by Carl Sagan, a founder of the Planetary Society.
Sixteen hydrazine thrusters helped Voyager orient itself as it flew by the four outer planets, two gas giants and two ice giants: Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, and Neptune, completing the first real grand tour. Such a planetary alignment only occurs every 176 years, so NASA decided to use the opportunity.
