Charlie Nicholas, endodontist and CEO of d2dENDO shows how quick and easy obturating with smartseal really is.

smartseal is a cutting edge product designed to make root canal treatments quick, easy and predictable.

Using hydrophilic polymer technology the ProPoint root canal obturation points are designed to swell laterally in the root canal to ensure that an effective, 3D seal is achieved. Its so quick and easy to use, you will be able to fit more patients into your busy schedule- one GDP in Peterborough has found smartseal saves at least 10 minutes per treatment, which equates to reduced surgery costs and happier patients.

smartseal is also biocompatible, clean and contains no latex components giving you piece of mind with an increased likelihood of success.

ProPoint S is designed to match fit the Sendoline S5 file system with obturation points that match the finishing files S2 through to S4. Along with ProPointPT it is the world only variable tapered expanding obturation point.

ProPoint is also available to match constant taper file systems, and is available in both 4% and 6% tapers. A smartgauge is available to trim the points to the required apical tip size so that one point fits all. See our video...

  • Most of the images showed poor lateral compaction and, without handling the material myself, the results of the obturation show a lack of apical control and poor compaction of the apical delta in the mesial canal. Measuring with a perio probe- how wide is your apical prep!? And furthermore, the tooth being prepared does not appear to be the one in the radiograph, unless the amalgam was placed ex post facto. I think that, for the moment, I will stick with trusted techniques.

  • @greendriller Hi Greendriller. There is no lack of apical control - the sealer extrusion is a sign that the canal was patent at the start and throughout the treatment - which is crucial to ensuring a clean canal. This cannot be assumed to be poor apical control as it is not a propoint overfil. One of the advantages of prosmart is that no or very little apical pressure is needed unlike warm gp obturation methods.

  • @greendriller Also as the sealer is highly biocompatible with a release of hydroxyapetite upon setting, host cells in this area will actually respond positively rather than it becoming an irritant. There is no obturation material today that will completely fill the apical area so we are still going to be reliant on the sealer to make up for apical deficiencies- hence better to use one which is non-irritant and biocompatible.

  • @greendriller Regarding the perio probe this is purely to measure the depth of the access cavity enabling the point to be trimmed to coronal orifice level outside the tooth, not the entire length of the canal!

  • Hi Charlie-- that is a great tip !! i have been using Smartseal for a while and got fed up with trying to cut the point with burs-- the burs would often dislodge the point and everything was a bit messy. Your technique is clean and simple with no cleaning up needed. Many thanks -- John Moore -- uk dentist.
