The Rock 'n' Roll Barbershop of Brooklyn

Tomcats Barbershop in Greenpoint, Brooklyn is known for a lot of things, but pretension isn't one of them.

Opened in 2006 by Renee and Alex Melnichenko and their business partner Joe Covington, the shop specializes in classic American haircuts (the pompadour is high on the list of top requests). They charge around $20 for one of those cuts, which is a third or a fourth of the cost of a similar shave at many of the city's trendy barbershops and salons.

But it's the atmosphere -- swinging rockabilly music, vintage americana decor, and free Pabst Blue Ribbon -- that makes the regulars keep coming back.

The shop is located at 130 India Street, off of Manhattan Avenue, in Greenpoint -- for now. In a few months' time the barbershop will be operating out of a larger space just across the street, which will accomodate their expanding clientele without losing their local roots.

I got a haircut from these guys couple months back. Loved it. They also have a bunch of pomades for sale and you can sample them. Left with a great cut and a tin of Sweet Georgia Brown.
