Having given his first public performance at the age of 4 and often compared to Liszt and Rubinstein, Albeniz was a virtuoso pianist. He also composed music for the piano, initially in the style of Schubert, Chopin and Brahms. He then studied with Felipe Pedrell, a Spanish nationalist who believed that Spanish composers should write Spanish music. In the last 4 years of his life, Albeniz composed Iberia: 12 new Impressions, a suite of 12 piano pieces in 4 books, combining Spanish folk tunes and European-Romantic influences. The orchestral adaptation heard this evening was premiered in the United States by Leopold Stokowski and the Philadelphia Philharmonic in 1926. The work depicts the celebration of Corpus Christi Day in Seville, during which the body of Christ is carried in a procession through the city streets.
