Solo for Mapex Drumheroes

Here is a little improvised solo I recorded today for the Canadian Mapex competition. It consists of both new and old ideas, along with some mistakes that always slip into my improvisation.

The first ostinato is an inverted paradiddle, while the second one is in 5/16. I play 9/8 over top, as well as a couple short sections on the toms in 7/16 and 13/16.

There is a very abrupt section with a songo and a poorly executed 2:3 son clave underneath. There is also a little section with linear rolls on the right side and a little bit of playing against it. The end of the video consists of some faster patterns, a triple hi-hat groove ala Marco Minnemann, and some drum rolls.

Why do you play the pedals without shoes? Is it more easy? Or there are another reason?

I find that I have more control without shoes on. I started without shoes so I just got used to it! :-)

Hi there!

I went about learning the clave pattern by first playing it by itself. I then played it against different hand patterns, such as doubles, paradiddles, flams etc. After this I added the pattern on the right foot!

Try building it up like that, I found it much easier than trying to jump into the whole groove all at once.
