Wonderful. Thank you for sharing your expert knowledge; I have learned so much from your years of experience.
On a quilted Maple project - an Fender amp combo, I used a stain after sanding to 600 grit followed by rubbing off surface colour with 600 again thenTung oil left to dry out for two weeks before adding a clear Nitrocellulose without precat and then left to dry for 3 weeks until hard enough to rub flat. i'm here nowand will finally sandto 2000 grit prior to compound and swirl remover.

Great videos! After applying the technique you demonstrated, would I need to apply a shellac coat for shine? If so what kind of shellac can be applied on top of a water-based clear coat? I've got a zebra-wood door that I made and I'm terrified of ruining it by finishing it incorrectly.

thats totally wild! thanks for sharing your tricks, your one cool cat!
shellac or any topcoat will give the shine and add depth to the piece you would apply the waterbased topcoat over shellac if you used it, waterbased dyes and stains all finished are ok to use...the procedure would be to simply use a waterbased top coat directly over the waterbased dyes or stains, shellac is not needed...only need to use shellac over an oil based dye or stain.....

when would you use an emulsifier? can you use shellac with a waterbase clear?
rupest 4 years ago
1/2 lb cut shellac is all you need and it works very well UNDER water base

Cheers, do you have any expierience with a deep ebony/black stain technique. I would like to create sort of an asian finish but still keep the ripples of the tiger. Thanks again.

wow can this be done on maple andcherry also?
bbawy 4 years ago
yes, but only if you want to accent the figure and normally that is not the case on regular maple or cherry. In that case you want to do the reverse, that is to create a barrier on the bare wood and stain over that to get a nice even color, stay tuned. We're doing a tube thing showing that too. BTW, this is figured maple.
