An astonishing thing to see - Near Oxford - England. This was filmed at an RSPB reserve called Otmoor. It is the most remarkable thing I have ever seen - and as a video camerman I have seen some pretty amazing things.
The music is from a companny called CSS Music. The track is "soaring with the sun" - .

Hi, Dylan. I got your contact information from your beautiful YouTube video published in February 2007.
Audubon Magazine published a wonderful article about starling flock behavior earlier this year: http://www.audubonmagazine.org/featur... . My favorite segment from the article:
Like drivers on a freeway, starlings dont appear to mind having neighbors nearby on their sides—or above and below, for that matter—as long as they have open space ahead. That makes sense, since the presence of a clear path in the direction of travel minimizes the likelihood of collisions should the birds need to shift their course abruptly, as is likely when a falcon attacks. But whats really nifty about this spatial asymmetry is that the researchers have been able to use it to calculate the number of neighbors to which each starling pays close attention—a quantified elaboration of Pottss chorus line idea. By looking at correlations between the movements of neighboring starlings, they can show that each bird always pays attention to the same number of neighbors, whether theyre closer or farther away. How many neighbors is that? Six or seven, says Cavagna, who points out that starlings in flocks can almost always see many more nearby birds— but the number may be closely tied to birds cognitive ability.
The direction of the flock can be coordinated by each birds tracking six or seven other birds. Remarkable. This is a very different kind of cognitive skill.

@ wightnproud: you have a deal! the squirrels do less damage here than the starlings do.... I'll ship you a box of birds if you ship me a box of squirrels...the starlings aren't so humble here (they must have adopted the "if-you-need-it-take-it-from-o thers" attitiude most Americans have) so feel free to take them.... it's better than watching them get killed! they are lovely...in a destructed kind of way.
I wish it were possible! I love watching Greys scamper about!
I live in an area where we have large flocks of starlings like the one in this video and they take our native woodpecker and scrub jay nests as well as pass disease.
I thank you for your courtesy as well... I tried to talk with "eyesopenedwide00" and was told to jump off a bridge (which is a bit dramatic considering we were talking about starlings not religion)... should I expect my box o' squirrels soon? lol
Peace to you too...whilst not agreeing with you I do understand your reasons, and the detrimental effect introduced wildlife has on indigenous species.
Starlings are not my favourite bird but they are quite clever and do have character! This video is phenomenal though, I think its amazing.
Check out our red squirrels you will love them....my wife and I have adopted one!
We are so blessed to live where we do and have the variety of nature we have around us.
just our of curiousity, what was it you didn't agree with? I won't be offended and I'm not trying to start an arguement, I'm just interested in hearing your opinions.
I suppose we agree really!! Neither of us like the thought of things being killed but the difference being I am ok with starlings - you aren't and you are okay with grey squirrels - and I am not. Other than that I think we are on same wavelength. Best wishes
...the fact remains, these birds are destroying the natural habitat of native birds which will eventually cause damage to the surrounding ecosystems. It's the same thing that happens when you introduce asian carp to lakes in the US. They kill the native animals and destroy the ecosystem. The birds wouldn't have to be killed if man hadn't brought them here in the first place, so your attitude, language choice and arguments show your lack of knowledge on the subject.
Nature didn't intent for the starlings to be in the US. They were brought here and used as props in plays in the New England area. They do cause a lot of damage to native birds in the US and even though you have a point about humans being the biggest pests in the world, you have to understand the the starlings introduction in the US is, in some areas, destroying the last remaining natural habitats for native birds that are left. While I disagree with the killing of these birds in mass numbers..

We are blessed to live on an island that is 'Grey-free' as the Greys spread disease which kill the Reds.
Bit off the point from starlings I know but Wouldn't it be great if we could do this deal for real! LoL
Although we have different views I thank you for your courtesy...it seems people delight in being rude to each other on Net.
