There are almost 32,000 children and young people in care at any one time in Australia and
the numbers have grown at the rate of 10 percent per year for the last decade.
The views of children and young people in care or who have had a care experience are
valued highly by CREATE. These children and young people are experts about their lives in
care. They can provide not only information about their experiences, but also thoughtful
proposals on how the system can be improved.
To harness these ideas and energies and to give young people a stronger voice at a national
level, CREATE has established a National Youth Advisory Council. The National Youth Advisory Council comprises up to three representatives from each state
and territory. Nominations were sought from CREATEs pool of young consultants who
contribute to CREATEs work at a state and territory level through the state Youth Advisory
Groups. The current membership of twenty three young people are aged 15 to 24 years.
