it's just that there's no reason to arrogantly put yourself so much above other people just because you took the time and learned a few more and visited a few countries (trust me, i have too).

actually no, i'd prefer to speak english to american& british tourists. it's not worth the effort trying to explain stuff in a language they don't understand anyway. i live in europe and i'm fluent in 4 languages. but when i'm abroad all i need is english. english is the language of the internet and it's probably the most undestood language on the planet (not as native but learned). you're pretty well off with speaking just the one language. i don't mean to say that knowing more languages is bad

@Vanillastump I'm sorry or excuse me is spelled ごめんなさい and gomen nasai in romaji. If that person is really at fault, they might say こちらこそ kochira koso which means "I should say that". :-)
