Pregnancy stimulates the production of progesterone in a woman's body, which causes a cascade of physical and emotional changes designed to protect the health of mother and baby. With the birth of the baby, the mother's oxytocin levels increase, causing her uterus to contract and stimulating her desire to bond with the infant. Most men also experience hormonal shifts during pregnancy and the post-delivery period, which also prepare them to protect and nurture their new baby. This presentation is based on Dr. Louann's book "The Female Brain."
