Tonight marks the third straight night of the "Attack of the Carolling Children". Here in the Philippines, carolling isn't so much a tradition as it is an institution. People who decorate their houses, especially foreigners, attract neighborhood children (and sometimes adults) who stand at their gate and sing loudly until you a) give them money or b) tell them to go away. Please note that (b) only works if you are prepared to endure at least 45 minutes of increasingly loud, off-key vocals. These little rascals came by 3 times tonight, growing in number each time, before we finally decided to video tape it. We ended up handing out a few pesos. They'll be back tomorrow night. So I have 24 hours to figure out a new tactic so I can earn some peace and quiet!
