I'm 17 and first heard this when I was six... been in love with it ever since. Recently rediscovered it and started to appreciate the amazing orchestration and melody writing. It's just fucking fantastic, a masterpiece. One of the best pop songs ever written IMO. Pop music with the emphasis on "music".

Heard this a lot as a kid (born in '71), maybe my parents had it on a record or 8-track, loved it then, still love it. Makes me wish for the music of that era again, when what an artist looked like didn't really matter, we just loved the music for what it was.

The "bridge"/ "orchestration" is a direct rip from Jean Sibelius' Symphony # 5. A fabulous symphony you should check it out. Many pop and rock artists have "borrowed" from classical composers over the years which is I guess testament to the fact that great "music" will always stand the test of time.

Cool thing about this song. If I didnt know for a fact it was released in 1974 I would date it mid 60's by the overall sound and the Beach Boys style harmony but the lyrics

make it clear that it is a nostalgia song about the 60's beach scene. Executed masterfully by Brits who probably had no experience/connection the song. TALENT.
